Resume:

In 1995 the first Straw Bale Buildings (SBB) were built in Mongolia in order to improve the thermal insulation of buildings with low cost, ecological and locally available materials. Since 1997, UNDP of Mongolia has been participating trough various programs to the development of such initiatives. In 2002 UNDP launched the “Commercialization of Super-Insulated Buildings in Mongolia” project which goal was large-scale unsubsidized replication of super-insulated straw bale buildings (SBBs) in Mongolia. Principal components of this project were: technical support, training, awareness raising and full funding of demonstration super-insulated SB (straw bale) primarily for social services and institutional buildings (schools, kindergartens, health clinics, local government offices, etc).

In order to scale up and mainstream SBB in Mongolia, a third project will be launched with the following components:

  1. Revision of Mongolian Building Code, Norms and related Standards (BCNS)
  2. Demonstration of New and Improved Energy Efficient Building Technologies
  3. Training and Awareness Program
  4. Facilitating access to energy efficiency financing
